MPI Academia: In Islamic teachings, the Prophet Adam alaihissalam is believed to be the first human created by Allah SWT. The Qur'an explains that Allah created Adam from clay and then breathed into his soul, causing Adam to come to life and become a human being. This is confirmed in His words: "And (remember), when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed I will create a human being from dry clay (which comes from) black mud which was given shape. So when I have perfected the event, and have breathed into it my spirit (creation), then bow down to it by prostrating." (Q.S Al-Hijr [15]: 28-29)
Adam was then appointed as caliph on earth, namely a creature who was given the mandate to prosper, manage, and protect life in accordance with God's instructions. This story is explained in the words of Allah: "(Remember) when your Lord said to the angels, 'I will make a caliph on earth." They said, "Are You going to place someone there who will cause corruption and shed blood, while we praise You and sanctify Your name?" He said, "Indeed I know what you do not know." (QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 30). This shows that humans have had a big responsibility since the beginning of their creation.
Apart from being the first human, Adam was also chosen by God as a prophet who was given guidance and revelation. Even though he had made the mistake of eating fruit from the forbidden tree, Adam immediately repented, and Allah accepted his repentance. The Qur'an states: "Then, Adam received several sentences from his Lord, then He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Most Accepting of repentance, the Most Merciful." (QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 37). From this story, humans are taught that mistakes are part of life's journey, but the path to repentance and returning to Allah is always open. Thus, Adam's existence as the first human became an example for all humanity in understanding their origins, duties, and servitude to Allah. (MPIAcademia/2025/09/25)
